Issue Starting Gigaspaces 8 on Ubuntu

Hi all,

I've just downloaded Gigaspaces 8 premium and am trying to get it started up on Ubuntu following the guide at [ http://www.gigaspaces.com/wiki/displa... ]. I'm probably doing something very basically wrong but on running gsInstance.sh the process seems to get stuck after creating the RMIRegistry.

Here's the output from gsInstance:

+$ ./gsInstance.sh+ +Starting a Space Instance+ +Setting default space url to /./mySpace?schema=default&properties=gs&groups=gigaspaces-8.0.0-XAPPremium-ga+

I've set the NIC_ADDR to 127.0.0.1 as you can see from the example.

I've also attempted to run step 3 from the guide and obtain the following output from the ping:

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

andy

you should probably export LOOKUPGROUPS and / or LOOKUPLOCATORS as well

try pinging using 127.0.0.1, or whatever you set NIC_ADDR

if this doesn't work send a mail (including any command line output) to

jb@gigaspaces.com

Hi All,

I'm trying out GigaSpaces XAP 8.0.2 on mu Ubuntu 10.04 64bit machine and I'm having the same troubles (or very similar) to the ones that Andrew had reported.

I'm trying to test if GigaSpaces XAP works fine using the steps listed [here|http://www.gigaspaces.com/wiki/display/XAP8/Testing+System+Environment] but although the instance starts successfully (see attached log named 2011-06-18~23.54-gigaspaces-service-ubuntu-8214.log) I'm unable to find the default Java space (in this case mySpace) through the lookup service using the commands

gs.sh space ping -url jini:////mySpace (Multicast)

gs.sh space ping -url jini://ubuntu/*/mySpace (Unicast)

I've done also the steps to enable the multicast on the network interface in use (in this case the wireless) but without any success.

I've also tried to connect directly to the GigaSpaces XAP instance using telnet on the port 4166 (where the jini service is listening) and the connection was successful.

Finally I tried to run the processes under root but no way.

BTW I tried to run GigaSpaces XAP under Windows 7 64 bit on the same machine and it worked perfectly.

There must be something that I forgot or doing wrong. Anyone has got an idea or advice?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mic,

See this from the log file you posted:

2011-06-18 23:54:55,909 INFO [com.sun.jini.reggie] - started Reggie: bfa8b884-e3a8-4b78-a47e-bf661b664956, [gigaspaces-8.0.2-XAPPremium-ga], jini://ubuntu:4166/

Here are few options that should help:
- set the NIC_ADDR enviroment variable to 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.2
- edit your hosts file to include the machine name IP (ubuntu).

Thanks Shay.

I follow your advice for creating NIC_ADDR environment variable but still I was having problems.

I found out that on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, although the multicast was enable on the network interface, the firewall was silently dropping all the multicast packets.

So to fix the problem, I allowed the multicast on the firewall. I should have thought about it at the first place but in the logs nothing was reported so I was literally fooled.

Anyway thanks!

I see. You should have tested multicast. See: http://www.gigaspaces.com/wiki/displa... Shay

How your hosts file looks like? Do you have localhost specified over there? Can you set your NIC_ADDR to your a valid machine IP (192.168.1.4) and retest?
