How do I disable a Polling container programmatically?

We have scenarios where the processing of events by the Polling container becomes corrupt and we wish to stop processing. In order to stop our Polling container we could just do a Thread.sleep() but that's clumsy. It looks like DynamicEventTemplate would be an alternative, set the template to a "DISABLED" type, still pretty clumsy. Is there a programmatic way to tell the container not to process anymore event?

We're using Spring so we don't have a reference to the container itself.
