Template Query with Collections

Seem to have hit a catch 22 with pojo that has a child collection.

I started with development in a local space. I need to null the collection when creating a template for search, works fine. But when I deploy to a partitioned space the read fails with

Class: [my class name] , operation: read , load-balancing: hash-based, Broadcast mode: BROADCAST_IF_NULL_VALUES , problem: NULL value in indexed field '[my field]' is not permitted.

My field is a ArrayList if that matters.

I can with an empty list and I get past that error, but the query returns no results, of course that's why I nulled the field in the first place.

Any help?

What's your routing field value? This must be declared when using partitioned space and should be null in case you want to query all partitions.
Do you perform read operation with timeout >0? This is not supported with null routing field with partitioned space.

Thanks Shay, I hadn't yet declared a routing field. Course a clear exception in that case would go a long way. I was using a non zero read time. Routing field in place fixed it.
